Jimmy Barnes was born April 28th 1956 as James Swan at Cowcaddens, Glasgow, Scotland. In 1961 Jimmys family moved to Adelaide and his parents divorced. His mother remarries Reg Barnes. Jimmy's interest in music started when his older brother John began singing in different local bands and in 1973 Jimmy became lead singer in a band called "Orange", which later took the name Cold Chisel. In 1978 there self titled debut album was released. It contained the classic song "Khe Sanh", a song that became synonymous with the bands attitude and often provocative lyrics and live performances. In 1981 Jimmy married Jane. By this time Cold Chisel was the biggest band in Australia and they decided to make a last album and a last tour. The album became Twentieth Century and the name of the tour, The Last Stand. Less than six months after the chisel breakup Jimmy had a new band and a contract with Mushroom Records. His first solo album, "Bodyswerve", came out in 1984, followed by "For The Working Class Man" (1985).
In 1986 Jimmy and his family moved to California but soon returned to Australia. The album "Freight Train Heart" was finished in Sydney and was followed by a live album called "Barnestorming" (1988). Then in 1990, Jimmy worked with producer Don Gehman which resulted in "Two Fires" and on this one, Jimmys soulvoice is very obvious. This soulvoice came undone in Jimmys next album "Soul Deep". In 1993 Jimmy released two albums: "Heat" and "Flesh and Wood". In 1995, Jimmy moved to France and recorded "Psyclone". The album did not sell as well as expected. Jimmy moved back in 1996 and the same year "Hits" was released. 1998 saw the reformation of Cold Chisel with a brilliant new album "The Last Wave of Summer" and an extremely successful Australian tour. For the 1999-album 'Love And Fear', Jimmy worked with INXS-drummer Jon Farriss. In 2000 Jimmy left Mushroom Records to sign with Warner Music and went to the USA to record the follow-up to his multiplatinum-selling album 'Soul Deep'.
