Whiteley speaks of graduating in law in 1932, his work in local government until he became Mayor of Cowra, N.S.W. in 1942, Council approval for the Army to establish a military camp, but the Army actually constructing an internment camp for Italians from north Queensland, Greeks and Japanese also interned, a Tribunal established for the release of prisoners, refugees being brought in under protective custody, the attitudes of Cowra folk to the internment camp, large numbers from Cowra enlisted in the army out of loyalty to the British Empire, Italians changing names in order to enlist, the Italian POWs entertaining troops at mess while Len's wife provided music to the Italians.
Len's father sponsoring POWs from Italy back to Australia, the different attitudes and practices towards Italians and Japanese, how the Breakout occurred, Whiteley not empowered to direct civilians to take military action at the camp, dependent on the actions of the Army Adjutant, reaction of the local community, media silence due to fear of incurring reprisals by the Japanese.
