Gwen Norris, born 1947 in Sydney speaks about her family background; her family being early settlers who opened up an area in the Upper Macleay; her parents meeting in New Guinea during WWII; her schooling; her interest in youth work, studying while working with the Young Men's Christian Association (YMCA); her marriage at 20 years of age; completing a social work degree in Canberra; moving from a banana farm near Kempsey to Papua New Guinea (PNG) as her husband was to manage a copra plantation; describes life and living conditions in PNG; living there from 1971 to 1974; the general unrest in PNG and returning to the Kempsey district to a family property; teaching at Kempsey High then at the Technical and Further Education (TAFE); her work for Legacy; the structure of the Legacy organization; the role of the Legatees and general work of Legacy.
Norris speaks about her involvement in community life; her interest in dancing, round, square and clogging; the Kempsey Country Music Festival; learning new steps, building on very basic knowledge and starting to teach; round dancing, the more formal structure of dances; gives a dance description of the schottische; describes the steps for the 'varso-viannas' danced in the 1950's also the heel and toe polkas; the fiddle and piano providing the music; speaks about the groups she was involved with and her community work; the Order of Australia Medal for service to Australia, especially to the dancing world; square dance terminology.
