Simone Penkethman talks about growing up in Chapman, ACT; her experience of living in Duffy in the 1990's; the decision to move into her grandmother's vacant house in Duffy whilst pregnant with her second child; changes in the suburb over time; how the days before the fire were taken up with CD organising and promotion; prior to the fire she was working two days per week job at Southside Community Services; being aware of fires before 18th January; her experiences of the fire and the scene at the evacuation centres; knowing that the house had burnt down; later learning that her mother's house had survived; her children's reactions; the realisation of how close to death they had been; the immediate days after the fire; Centrelink and other practical things that had to be done; issues for people in casual and contract work; her financial position; the support, food and furniture vouchers; housing issues as a private tenant; the CD being reduplicated, rescheduling the launch; starting a new job; returning to the house for the first time; items that survived; how all of her immediate neighbours houses were burnt.
Penkethman speaks about when her children returned to the house; taking the children to Weston Park on first day of school; loss of her own music, musical instruments, master recordings of unreleased material and her record collection; coping with this loss immediately after the fire; being interviewed; the impact on parenting; practical management post fire; donations from organisations; housing; community responses; the media interest in her story; the coronial inquiry; her participation in community activities as a performer; Anniversary activities; the National Folk Festival performance Easter 2003; story of grandmother's house post-fire, the decision against rebuilding; now living in O'Connor and having less contact with the Weston Creek community; the changes in Duffy; the impact of fire, getting over the trauma; her new work; her relationship with her children, rebonding since the move to O'Connor; the importance of family connections and support.
