Emma Walter talks about her family's move from Adelaide to Canberra; growing up in Holder with her twin sister Samantha; her sense of changes in the suburb over time from 1981; the changes in family living arrangements; her sister living in Duffy with her mother to look after her grandfather, while she lived with her father in Holder; where life was up to at the time of the fire; working at Melbourne Open tennis tournament from about 10 January; hearing about the fires on January 18th; she discusses the fires from the points of view of herself, her sister, father and mother; her reactions and feelings when hearing about the loss of the house; phases after the fire; the realisation that she had not dealt with her own feelings; managing the situation through activity.
Walter discusses the rebuilding process, looking forward to the house being finished; the changes in Holder; her university work; the Memorial; participation in the anniversary; community activities after the handing down of Coronial Inquest findings; thoughts about management of fire and recovery process; the role of the media; local publications; feelings for Canberra and the community spirit; the difficulty of talking about the experience; things missed most; writing about the experience; a past event that will always be a changing point; the experience of doing the interview; the person she will become will be shaped by the fire experience.
