Lola Greeno talks about her work as an artist and shell necklace maker; being inspired by a non-Indigenous women at a workshop; her training; the first displays of her work; the recognition; her work held in galleries; presently working as a Program Officer in Aboriginal Arts (Arts Tasmania); continuing shell jewellery as a craft; the four other main makers of shell jewellery, Dulcie Greeno, Muriel Maynard, Corrie Fullard, Jeanette James; conservation, preserving the shells; the types of shell used; non-Indigenous shell collectors; the recent interest in Tasmanian shell necklaces; her opinions on sale of necklaces, being displayed appropriately; her other projects; mentorships.
Greeno speaks about her family background; being born on Cape Barren Island in 1946; living there until she was 12 years; moving to Flinders Island, Lady Barren; moving to Launceston in 1972 with her young family; her European father originally going to the Island to mine tin; her mother selling necklaces for a few shillings; her Indigenous heritage being through her mother; learning how to string shells; going to the beach with her mother and collecting shells; different designs; her own patterns; the types of shells, toothies, rice shells, gull shells, black crows, maireeners, oat shells, cats' teeth and penguin shells; the price of necklaces; passing on the skills; continuing the tradition; running more Indigenous women's workshops; other communities who work in shells such as Torres Strait Islands, La Perouse [N.S.W.] being keen to work together; her hopes for the future.
