MS 1174 chiefly comprises correspondence between Vance and Nettie Palmer. There is also correspondence from contemporary literary figures such as Katharine Susannah Prichard, Marjorie Barnard, Frank Dalby Davison, Kate Baker, Guido Baracchi, Louis Esson, C. Hartley Grattan, Kathleen McArthur, Hugh McCrae, Leonard Mann, Bernard O'Dowd and Henry Handel Richardson. In addition, drafts, press cuttings, original manuscripts of other writers, photographs, material from various literary bodies such as the Australian Society of Authors and the Fellowship of Australian Authors (64 security binders, 38 boxes, 1 medium folio box, 1 small folio box).
The Acc10.018 instalment consists of a postcard from "R" addressed to Nettie Palmer, c/o Westminster Bank, London. Date unclear (1 folder).

Edward Vivian (Vance) Palmer was the foremost man of letters of his day in Australia, being a novelist, dramatist, short story writer, poet, critic, biographer, editor and political and social commentator. Janet Gertrude (Nettie) Palmer (née Higgins), wife of Vance, was well-known as a poet, biographer, literary critic, commentator, historian, diarist, letter writer, editor and translator. Vance published in magazines under the pseudonym Rann Daly. Nettie was the daughter of John and Kitty Higgins and a niece of the politician and judge, Henry Bournes Higgins.
