Michael was born in Drayton, near Toowoomba in 1915. He became a school teacher, taking school appointments from 1936 to 1961 when he retired from Rangeville School in Toowoomba. He taught in many schools through North Queensland, from Cairns to Toowoomba. His teaching was broken by his enlistment in the army during the 2nd World War between 1940 and 1945, when he served in the small ships unit.
