- Biography/History:

"Plate XIII. Lieutenant-General Sir Andrew Clarke was born on July 27th, 1824m at Southsea, Hants. In 1844 he entered the Royal Enginieers as Second Lieutenant, and in 1846 was appointed aide-de-camp to Sir William Denison, Governor of Van Diemen's Land, now Tasmania. In 1853 he was appointed Surveyor-General and Chief Commissioner of Crown Lands in Victoria, and in 1855 became Surveyor-General with a seat in the Ministry. Three years later he resumed his military duties, subsequently commanding the Royal Enginieers of the Eastern and Midlands districts, and serving against the Ashantees and as Governor of the Straits Settlements, besides holding other high positions both in India and at home. Since he left Australia he has maintained his interest with it , and as Agent-General for Victoria was closely associated with the ultimate success of the Federation Movement."--Typed note attached on reverse of image.
