John McDermott speaks of his father, Harry McDermott; the family upbringing and conditions in Strahan; the family's occupation on the wharves; his life at school; his employment at the Mt Lyell mine in Queenstown; the family's interest in music; playing in dance bands. He sings several songs handed down in the family and several songs learnt during his period of National Service (military) in the 1950s.
