Nathan Jarro speaks about becoming a barrister; his marriage to Allie (2006); memories of his wedding day; currently living in Hawthorn; his family; working as a solicitor at Truscott’s law firm; becoming an independent barrister; preferring to work on a variety of civil practices; indigenous matters; not taking on family or criminal law cases because of poor pay rates and hazardous client relationships; covering personal injuries matters; the reopening of the Mulrunji case and the Coronial Inquest; the relationship between Deputy Police Prosecutors (DPPs) and the police; barrister Andrew Bow; Dan O’Gorman; the Mulrunji case dragging for years; working for the Aboriginal Legal Service; currently working as a consultant managing two Native Title claims; his dad making a Native Title claim.
Jarro talks about the last seven years of Aboriginal politics; board positions; Queensland Aboriginal and Torres Strait Island Committee (QATSIC) advising the State Government on Indigenous matters, including the new Preamble to the Queensland Constitution; his time being flexible and manageable as a barrister; joining the board of National Indigenous Television (NITV); the AIJA (Judicial Administration) conference; loving his work; winning half his cases; his hopes of having children, greater career and financial success; learning more about his own Aboriginality; Harry the dog; being realistic and patient about his plans.
