This booklet describes how students can finance their college expenses, how the College Scholarship Service functions, and how financial need is determined. Included are a number of suggestions that are intended to be helpful to a counselor. Among these are: (1) encourage all capable students to continue their education whatever their financial circumstances, (2) use federal programs to help students of marginal motivation to gain more confidence in planning for the future, (3) help students to understand that they are the ones to gain from higher education and not be be reluctant to apply for loans and grants, (4) help parents and students understand that financial aid is usually awarded on the basis of need rather than achievement, (5) help parents to understand that colleges expect them to draw primarily on their income, (6) urge students in need of aid to save for their education, and (7) urge students to write to non-college sponsors and colleges for aid information. A list of colleges and agencies using the parents confidential statements for awarding scholarships is given. (Author/KJ)
