- Summary:
-
The document discusses a 5-day outdoor education program held in the spring of 1968 for 31 fifth graders from Prairie Lincoln Elementary School, Grove City, Ohio; site of the self-supporting resident experience ($23 estimated cost per student) was The Columbus Presbytery Camp, Lancaster, Ohio. As reported, the primary purpose of the outdoor experience was to develop social responsibility for planning wherein the students and their teacher cooperatively pre-planned language arts, mathematics, social studies, science, health, physical education, and art activities. The chronological planning summary offered in the document is supplemented by an activities schedule, follow-up activities such as student logs and student writings, children's evaluations, a parents' questionnaire summary, teachers' evaluations, and the outdoor education supervisor's evaluation which noted that, as a first try, this experience was "a success in every respect" and that future ventures should work to reduce the pressures, slow down the pace, and gain consistency in leadership by developing in the helping teachers a better understanding of what is to be accomplished. The 12-page appendix to the document includes the parent information handout and permission slip, a bedding and clothing list, a health information sheet, a list of cook-out supplies and the menu, and an equipment list.
