This paper presents statistical information on the degree of consistency shown by second- and third-grade teachers in producing student gains in the Metropolitan Achievement Test (MAT) scores. Data are presented separately for each grade and for 15 Title 1 versus 35 non-Title 1 schools. Included are correlations within each school year showing teacher consistency in mean residual gains produced across three successive school years. Although gain scores were computed with a simple linear model and several key factors could not be controlled, the stability coefficients obtained compare favorably with those previously reported and suggest that teacher consistency may be higher than previously suspected, at least among experienced teachers working in their usual fashion with their normal classes. Studies of such teachers who are stable over time in their relative effectiveness are needed to discover the teacher behaviors that are related to success in producing student achievement gains.
