- Summary:
-
Nationwide surveys of the status of the Doctor of Arts degree were made in March, 1970; November, 1971; November, 1972; January, 1974; and January, 1975. In order to update these five previous studies, questionnaires were sent to the graduate deans of the 341 member institutions of the Council of Graduate Schools in the U. S. during the last week of November, 1975, as well as to 36 non-member institutions offering doctoral programs. This study is based on responses from 343 of the 377 institutions, a 91 percent return. Statistical data are presented regarding the number of institutions offering or planning to offer the Doctor of Arts degree, numbers of candidates and degrees granted, similar programs, and general assessment of the Doctor of Arts degree by the 343 institutions responding to the questionnaire. The overall finding is that the D.A. degree continues to develop momentum with little, if any, financial support from government agencies. (LBH)
