This document is the eighth in a series of 12 early childhood program descriptions compiled by the Far West Laboratory for Educational Research and Development. The program described here is the Ameliorative Program developed by Merle Karnes at the University of Illinois in Champaign, Illinois. The Ameliorative Program is designed to prepare young disadvantaged children for effective participation in a standard school program. The developers of the Ameliorative Program classify the concepts and skills they consider prerequisites to academic success into three areas: (1) language development-reading readiness, (2) math, and (3) science-social studies. There are numerous curriculum guides for teachers in each curriculum area with stated behavioral objectives and corresponding criterion tasks for each lesson. Extensive evaluation studies have shown the effectiveness of the program. Included in the program description are brief outlines of: (1) goals and objectives, (2) content and materials, (3) classroom activities, (4) parent involvement, (5) professional and paraprofessional training, (6) administrative requirements and costs, (7) program development and evaluation, and (8) program history and present (1971) status.
