This guide is intended (1) to facilitate individualized planning for students to ensure that their education is as appropriate as possible and to give them relevance for the work they do in school; and (2) to aid communication among staff members, parents, and students by establishing a planning process. This guide leads the counselors, teachers, administrators, and students through a process of individual assessment and data collection that will help identify career goals and systematize planning to achieve them. The guide is organized around the following six areas that are considered basic to a comprehensive vocational assessment of individual students. These categories are job awareness, needs, skills and abilities, work habits, interests, and daily living skills. Six sections present detailed strategies for collecting student information relating to these six assessment categories. A detailed description of each category includes the expected outcomes associated with it and examples of assessment methods. At the end of each section a summary sheet provides space to record the results and organize the data to be transferred to the Assessment Profile (which is the topic of the final section of the plan guide) and to aid in the creation of an individual vocational education program. A glossary, resources, and references are provided in appendixes to the guide. (KC)
