The present study used a number of commonly observed sex-typed objects and activities as stimuli in an attempt to assess androgyny in primary school children. As a test of concurrent validity, children's preference scores were correlated with a parent-report measure of sex-typing. Three methods of sex role classification (between-sex median split, within-sex median split, and absolute midpoint split) were also examined in an effort to determine their similarities and differences using the same data set. Participants were 111 children in kindergarten through second grade and their parents. Child and parent measures showed strong sex differences in the types of stimuli preferred. Significant correlations were found between the parent and child measures for girls, but not for boys. The absolute midpoint method of sex-role classification placed the majority of boys in the masculine category and girls in the feminine category; nine percent of boys and 18 percent of girls were classified as androgynous. This method of classification yielded results similar to the more commonly used between-sex median split procedure but differed sharply from the within-sex median split method, which yielded a more even distribution of subjects. Results are discussed with respect to a number of methodological issues in the measurement of androgyny in children. (Thirty references and 7 tables are provided.) (RH)
