- Summary:

Based on the premise that teachers are the chief condition in the literate classroom, and that one of the most important things children do is to observe the way adults think and learn, this book presents five essays suggesting methods of inviting children into the adult world of reading and writing. After a foreword by Donald Graves and an introduction by the editor, the essays and their authors are: (1) "Roots and Wings: Literature and Children's Writing" (Ralph Fletcher); (2) "Chutzpah and the Nonfiction Writer" (Shelley Harwayne); (3) "Modeling the Process Approach in the Early Elementary Grades" (Virginia C. Schroder and Ann K. Lovett); (4) "Organic Mechanics: Developing Skills through Literature and Student Writing" (JoAnne Sangirardi-Gray and Elisabeth Meltzer); and (5)"Writing in Response to Reading: A Process Approach to Literacy Assessment" (Roger Farr). A children's book author index, a children's book title index, and information regarding two additional works which, with this book, complete a three-part series, are included. Contains 14 references. (NH)
