Collaborations between schools and parents, and schools and other institutions, seek to improve or expand available resources. This issue of "Focus in Change" focuses on two elementary schools with different models of collaboration in place. At Columbia Park Elementary School (Maryland) parents have been involved in site-based management teams since 1985. Principal Patricia Green shares her perspective on the changes she initiated when she was appointed principal. Virginia Walker, a parent who now coordinates Columbia Park's afterschool program, describes barriers that parents encounter as they step forward into more prominent school roles. A different sort of partnership has been established at the Denali Elementary School in Fairbanks (Alaska) where a principal worked with parents, teachers, and university faculty to establish a university-elementary school collaboration through which university faculty deliver substantive inservices in science and math--which teachers take for college credit--as well as coteach elementary school classes. Douglas Schamel, a biology instructor at the University of Alaska-Fairbanks and participant in the collaboration since its inception, shares his perceptions of the process of teaching science to elementary school teachers. Denali's principal, David Hagstrom, comments on the university-school partnership. The issue includes suggestions for further reading on the subject of school-community collaboration. (MLF)
