Ms King joined the Dept. of External Affairs as a typist in 1942 and became the second woman to head an Australian diplomatic mission. Her service included postings to Chungking, Shanghai, Tokyo, Hong Kong, Nauru and the Gilbert Islands, Fiji and Tonga.
