Alex recalls life in Forbes in 1957, working as an electrician, singing, travelling to Sydney to play 1st grade cricket, working on the National Bank; describes a woman singing Abercrombie Mountain (Whiskey in the Jar) in a pub. 2. Song: Abercrombie Mountain, 3. Alex discusses the collection of Black Velvet Band from Toby Wills in Western Australia; his experiences working on the railway in Western Australia; and working at a timber mill. 4. Song: Black Velvet Band, followed by a small part of the Jockey Song from Toby Wills. 5. Alex talks about recording Black Velvet Band; poetry and poems in Lismore; a bushranger story; Tim McMahon; his collection at the phonetics lab at Sydney University.
Alex speaks about the divisional accents in Australia; the collection of the song Whiskey in a Jar, from a Mrs Byrne; the collection of the song Wooloomooloo, from Peter Hamilton singing at Troubadour, and the verse that Alex wrote; the singing styles of A.L.L. Lloyd, the Bushwhackers, and Garry Shearston; performing Reedy River in Grenfell; the story of Gardiners Gold; touring with Gill Bros Circus; learning the banjo; the skills he learnt in circus about attracting crowds; the McCarthy era & ASIO confrontations; singing for Communist Party Concerts; the ABC and the lagerphone -origins of the lagerphone and tea chest bass.
