Charles speaks of his love of music, originating as far back as when he was a child listening to a battery radio; early interest in Hillbilly music & bush ballads; publishing information on Australian country music performers and record catalogues; his research and writings on country music, documenting the growth of country, hillbilly and heritage music in Australia; comments on the problems with the Tamworth Country Music Festival; the strong country music base in Tasmania; collection of older material on artists not publicised; his and others contributions to the preservation of country music; views on country festivals around Australia; views on yodelling-artists and their style.
Charles speaks of his early years, living in the west Ridley area of northwest of Tasmania, a timber industry and potato growing region; how the family worked on mixed farming involving dairying, potato growing and flax; rabbiting was the main source of cash and food; schooling between the years of 6 and 14, finishing at Grade 8, his interest in Australian history and poetry; travelling into town, using "butter" cheques to buy supplies; his interest in Hillbilly music; his first job with the Emu Bay Railway Company as "striker"( for blacksmith); his progress through the ranks until he became a steam engine driver; describes how people used the railway to attend sports days; types of goods carried-no train returned empty; unions; characters on the railway; writing poetry; transfer to other jobs because of a work related injury; railway company being taken over by the Americans; striking for redundancy pay; his views on unionism and retirement; National Service.
