Background
- Content Summary:
- The papers comprise Hodgkin's detailed diaries recording his voyage to and travels within Australia and New Zealand between March 1896 and February 1897, together with guides, maps and other items collected as part of his travels. The diaries include inserted maps, detailed sketch plans of towns and cities visited, sketches and photographs of places, buildings, people and natural features. They constitute a valuable source of information about the social and physical landscape of late nineteenth century Australia, including the lesser documented areas of northern Queensland and the Torres Strait islands.
- Biographical Note:
-
John Edward Hodgkin was the son of Jonathan Backhouse Hodgkin by his second marriage to Ann Backhouse, daughter of James Backhouse (1794-1869), the first Quaker missionary to Australia. The Backhouse and Hodgkin families were active members of the Society of Friends both in England and Australia, and J.E. Hodgkin's uncle, Thomas Hodgkin, also toured Australia meeting other Quakers in 1909-1910.
- Immediate Source of Acquisition:
-
The papers were donated to the Library by Michael Hodgkin, great-nephew of J.E. Hodgkin, in July 2005 through Professor Ken Taylor.
Copies of two photographs (items 4 and 5 in Series 4) were donated to the Library by Stephen Hodgkin in September 2005.
