Background

Scope and content:

MS Acc05.123 comprises material relating to The broken years, research material and drafts for the thesis on which the book was based, correspondence, draft material, photographs and reviews relating to the various editions of the book. Also includes material relating to Gammage's role as an historical consultant for the film "Gallipoli".

The Acc05.205 instalment includes correspondence and other papers relating to Gammage's research on Gallipoli, Anzac war memorials and other celebration of the Anzac spirit. Includes correspondence with Anzac participants and researchers, some with copies of their papers, ca. 1993-1998; copies of publications and journal and newspapers articles about Gallipoli participants and Anzac memorials (many by Ken Inglis and one by George Johnston), 1965-1998; conference papers by Gammage and others, including at 1994 Great War seminar and the 1990 International symposium on the 75th anniversary of the Dardanelles campaign; copies of archival material, including writings of C.E.W. Bean; war memorial leaflets and programs of memorial services for Anzac veterans.

The Acc06.019 instalment comprises draft manuscript, correspondence, reviews, invitation and awards relating to Sky travellers: journeys in New Guinea, 1938-1939; research notes and subject files on New Guinea with correspondence, ca. 1986-2004, transcripts and notes of interviews, 1967-1988, notebooks; copies of maps and other related map material relating to Papua and New Guinea; negatives and photographs of New Guinea and the Hagen-Sepik Patrol, ca. 1930-1940; and, tapes of interview.

The Acc21.066 instalment comprises files and research material relating to Papua New Guinea and University of Papua New Guinea; University of Adelaide; Australian History course handouts, exam papers; talks, articles, chapters and related correspondence for publications The Broken Years: Australian Soldiers in the Great War, The Sky Travellers: Journeys in New Guinea 1938–1939, The Biggest Estate on Earth: How Aborigines Made Australia, e Bicentennial History of Australia, Narrandera Shire; and papers relating to National Museum of Australia Council; Adelaide Anzac day Commemorative March, plus papers created by William Joseph Gammage (1884-1978) of Narrandera NSW.

The Acc22.65 instalment comprises correspondence, talks and interviews given by Gammage, supplementary material for 'Dunera Lives' Vol.2; files relating to: Narrandera, Sky Travellers, Broken Years and PNG patrol officers (Sepik) articles and an obituary for Brij Lal and art work by Martyn Wyndham-Read.
