Background

Scope and content:

The papers in MS 9000 comprise writing and publishing correspondence, correspondence with school children, drafts, synopses, maps, notes research material, cuttings, page and cover proofs, flyers and other papers relating to her novels and children's books Five times dizzy, Dancing in the Anzac deli, The house that was Eureka, The blooding, My place, and, Lucy in the leap year. Also includes papers relating to her book of short stories, The night Tolkien died, her dealings with the ABC over the series "The museum of here and now", the stage production of "Lucy in the leap year" and the stage, film and television productions of "Five times dizzy".

Major correspondents in MS 9000 include Oxford University Press, Barbara Mobbs (Wheatley's agent from 1988), Children's Book Council of Australia, International Board on Books for Young People, Penguin Books, Collins, Angus Robertson, Redress Press, SBS, Rosalind Price (Pixel Publishing), Omnibus Books, Belle Alderman, Margaret Aitken, Katherine Scholes, Donna Rawlins, Edel Wignell, Toss Gascoigne, Agnes Nieuwenhuizen, Julie Lewis, Barbara Jefferis, and Theatre South (19 boxes + 1 fol. box).

The Acc04.225 instalment comprises Australian Society of Authors correspondence regarding the Children's Writers Group, 1990-1994, mail from children, short stories, reviews and talks, papers relating to The night Tolkien died and Luke's way of looking, correspondence and other papers relating to the Charmian Clift biography, Landmarks, A banner bold and Highway (5 boxes).

The Acc05.061 instalment includes papers relating to the television series "Five times dizzy" and the play "Lucy in the leap year", correspondence, 1994-1998, drafts and correspondence concerning Vigil and The house that was Eureka, notes, news items and drafts of The life and myth of Charmian Clift, and papers relating to the Educational Lending Right and Martin Johnston (7 boxes).

The Acc08.193 instalment comprises research material and correspondence related to Charmian Clift and George Johnston. Photographs, book drafts, proofs and related research notes, copies of reviews and newspaper articles (6 boxes + 1 fol. box).

The Acc17.152 instalment comprises drafts, proofs, research and publicity material. Much of the correspondence is from schoolchildren to Nadia Wheatley and Ken Searle in response to My place (c.1987), Playground: listening to stories from country and from inside the heart (2011) Australians all: a history of growing up, from the ice age to the apology (2013) and Flight (2015) (8 boxes + 8 fol. boxes).

Immediate source of acquisition:
The original consignment was purchased by the Library in 1996. Further papers were donated in 2004 and purchased in 2005, 2008 and 2017.
