Against popular thought at the time, he discovered that the","\u003cspan class='subject'\u003eCarboniferous\u003c/span\u003e and","\u003cspan class='subject'\u003ePermian\u003c/span\u003e rock strata was not separated by an unconformity but by a steep overthrust fault, which he coined, 'the Hunter overthrust'. It was this 145km of mapping and identifying of this major feature in the Hunter that lead to Osborne's credentials as a significant structural geologist in Australia.
