Robinson speaks of his schooldays, after leaving school he stayed on at the farm and learnt the saddlery trade, the boats on the Clyde River, trucks used for carting wool, how he enlisted in the Army in 1941, his military training in the Light Horse, the pack transport company, how horses were used to cart rations from the A.I.F. camp to the POW camp, how Americans would solicit soldiers for mules, too many N.C.O.'s, his transfer to Cowra in 1942 where World War I wagons were used for carting, his view of the Italians as cheeky and no real trouble, how they got better rations than the troops, how they earned their keep by labouring mostly carting wood, social mixing between AIF and POW troops, POW guards had families in Cowra, how Jack first heard about the Breakout and the state of confusion that followed.
