Kerry Kendall born 1948 and educated in Townsville until the age of fourteen talks about learning to ride horses and milk cows on a dairy farm at a young age; the bullock drovers who used to travel through the area; the steep terrain on cattle droving routes; beginning work in a station camp or bullock depot at Dotswood, Qld.; the reasons why and how bullocks were shod while droving; shoeing horses and keeping the 'slippers'; the 'cleanskin' bullocks and wild bullocks; separating the cattle using open and closed yards; wanting to travel to the gulf and finding work in Rutland; describes being in Rutland and explains its boundaries; the Aboriginal method of fishing with spears at Rutland; a story of a picnic when a boat was capsized and was taken out to sea; being offered a job at Creswell; why he enjoyed working on stations; his experiences working in stock camps; outstanding managers, stockmen and ringers; horse breeding; 'dirty' horses; learning to shoe horses; learning work ethics from older men; good horsemen and cattle men he's known; tells a story of Mick the 'dogger', who used to set traps; diet when trapping; shooting and scalping wild dogs and selling the scalps.
Kendall talks about life in the bush and the difficulties giving children a good education; craftsmen in the bush; Mick Perks plaiting fencing wire to make toasting forks; Mick also being good with greenhide and as a leather worker; tells Mick's life story; Mick's brother Kevin (or 'Uncle'), who made knives using copper, brass, timber, horn and saws; his interest in Australian poetry and literature; his favourite books; the unbranded 'cleanskin' cattle on Dotswood and how they were often stolen; how it was easier to establish properties in the old days; the Hereford and Brahman breeds; chasing bulls and buffalo; the inbreeding; lantana on the land; story about trying to get a bullock out of the lantana; the 'Rubber Vine' in Queensland; introduced pests and Cane toads; working with Aboriginal people in the stock camps; learning bush sense, tracking and mob handling from Aboriginal stockmen; 'throwing' cattle; the Aboriginal people of good reputation he met, including boxers.
