This document presents a report of a study that was designed to determine the rate of retention of students enrolled in colleges and universities in Tennessee that physical facility needs of institutions in the state might be determined. The first year of study, 1968, was spent in compiling information on students entering Tennessee colleges and universities. In the fall of 1969, each participating college was sent a list of the students from their institutions who were in the original sample and were asked to indicate whether each student was enrolled as of the first week in October 1969. If the students were enrolled, they were classified as persisters. Those not enrolled were surveyed, and depending upon their responses, were classified as transfers, known terminators, or non-respondents. A similar procedure was followed in 1970 and 1971, and the data from the 1971 survey are presented here. After 3 years of school, it was found that of the original sample 34% of the students were in their original institutions, 13% were transfers, 13% were known terminators, and 40% were non-respondents.
