This guide is intended to assist students enrolled in programs to train nursing assistants for employment in an Indiana long-term health care facility. The first part discusses human development (growth, aging, and dying); communication with residents; sexuality; legal, ethical, and professional responsibilities of nursing assistants in long-term care facilities; and accident prevention and safety. Provided next are duty sections covering the following 16 topics: following procedures to ensure medical asepsis and cleaning; positioning, moving, ambulating, and transferring residents; making beds for and bathing residents; assisting with oral hygiene and hair and nail care; dressing and undressing residents; assisting with urine elimination, nutrition, and hydration; administering special skin care to residents; using supportive and protective aids; providing daily care; determining residents' vital signs; weighing residents; and preparing to admit them. Each duty section contains some or all of the following: introductory text; definitions of key terms; a list of necessary equipment and supplies; and suggested notes outlining prerequisites, a performance objective, key terms, equipment and supplies, audiovisuals and supplies, step-by-step procedures, key points, and activities/assignments for each duty. Appendixes include resource panels with names and affiliations of the members of ths subcommittee of the Indiana Health Facilities Council and expert review panel that oversaw production of the guide, comparison chart of duties and tasks, master list of equipment and supplies, bibliography, glossary, and excerpts from the Indiana Health Facilities Rules. Indexes of duties and tasks and transparencies are also provided. (MN)
