This report presents the comprehensive academic plan for undergraduate students to be phased in at Wake Forest University (North Carolina) beginning with the class entering in 1996. Four concepts are emphasized in the plan: (1) continued personalization and individualization of the professor-student relationship; (2) establishment of a first-year seminar program which will provide every first-year student with a small class focused on critical analytic skills in a disciplinary or inter-disciplinary context; (3) curricular and resource enhancements to meet the particular passions and needs of individual students, professors, and programs; and (4) the aggressive pursuit by the university of additional resources from all sources. The 36 recommendations of the academic plan are organized into the following categories: ideals, personal teaching, class and program availability, top-quality faculty, scholarship support, information technology, and added revenue. The plan is detailed in itemization of items and costs in each area for Phase 1. Appendices provide: a listing of forces and trends likely to influence the university during the next decade; the university's mission statement; an itemization of estimated annual costs of the proposed program; a statement of principles of teaching; and tables providing statistics about Wake Forest University including general facts, trends in undergraduate enrollments, average class sizes by program, comparison of salaries with comparable institutions, and comparison of tuition with selective institutions.
