- Summary:
-
This curriculum for mentally retarded children was prepared to provide assistance to the teacher who needs suggestions for materials and experiences which will increase pupils' understanding. The content of the social living units is presented so that the carefully designed series of experiences will help children develop insight into human relationships and social processes from the immediate environment through the extended environment to the removed environment. The criteria for selecting a unit as well as general principles for teaching each unit are presented. Specific types of social living lessons are provided, such as the orientation and initiation lesson, the research or study lesson, the discussion lesson, the review lesson, and the culminating activities. A section dealing with field trips is included. Science experiences and health and safety experiences are also covered. The integrated work period is presented as an important learning experience in the development of skill and dexterity and as an aid in making social science subject matter real and clear. Scheduling, types of work, teacher preparations, and check-up procedures are discussed. Suggestions for developing desirable work habits and a variety of work period activities are given. (jz)
